Teaching Sight Words in Kindergarten

When teaching sight words to my class I use a variety of techniques and strategies.  What works well for one student may not work for another.  To introduce the word, I first show it to my students on a flash card, then I write it on the white board, saying each letter name as I write.  Next I have them read the word 3 or so times to me then spell it. I then ask if someone could use that word in a sentence. I finish this off with using Heidi songs music or DVD if the sight word is included.
Teaching Sight Words: Do you need strategies for teaching sight words, high frequency words, Dolch or Fry words to kindergarten and first grade students? I have put together a weeks worth of creative ideas that will help get your students on the right track to learning their sight words in no time at all.
Day 1 Introduction
  • Flashcard introduction- Add the word to the pocket chart of flash cards
  • White Board-Write it on the white board, saying each letter name as I write it
  • Read it- Read the word 3 times whole class
  • Spell it- Spell out the word saying each letter together whole class
  • Sentence usage-Have students use it in a sentence
  • Music/DVD- play or Show Heidi Songs or Have Fun Teaching music or DVD if I have it.
Days 2 through 5
During the rest of the week my students are inundated  with sight word activities during center times, when they finish their work and during transitions.  Below is a list of what we do and a few product snapshots.
  • Flash Cards
  • Music/DVD
  • White boards: write it 3 times saying each letter as they write it.
  • Sight word searches
  • Fluency phrases
  • Sight word readers
  • PowerPoint presentations slide shows with the sight words each morning during our calendar routine or as we transition to the carpet throughout the day- I'll play the PPT.  I can easily mix the slides around so they aren't memorizing the order.
This packet includes 110 sight word search pages combined with a practice writing section. The first 100 Fry words are included in this packet. If you use Houghton Mifflen's Medallions program, the 46 sight words from the program are included
Fry List Sight Word Search. Your students will love searching for the hidden sight words. This is a great way to reinforce sight word recognition and spelling. For homework, I send home a sight word fluency homework sheet each night.  It really helps my students practice reading their sight words and it only takes  a minute or so.  As a bonus it shows the parents what words their child is having difficulty reading.
This pack is designed to help students practice sight word fluency at home each night. Parents are to circle the words their child reads correctly, then sign the bottom. There are 36 weeks of sight word homework. The words are rotated through a five week cycle. Directions are in English and Spanish. Technology to Help Teach Sight Words
During center times we often use iPads.  Here are some apps that are free or inexpensive.  Each app has it's pros and cons.
